Moses' Last Soliloquy

"...I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes,
but thou shalt not go over thither."
                                       Deuteronomy, 34:4

Gilead mourns me tardy on my Mount
and the physician will withhold his balm.
Sinai's light has vanished from my face
now broken like first tables of the law.
The cloud has wandered from the covenant
and I must rewalk the wilderness alone.
Jordan's waters had been fire unto my feet,
more bitter than water smitten from the stone,
but my love for thee, O Canaan, can not
die with me, for thou art my Promised Land.

"So Moses, the servant of Jehovah,
died there in the land of Moab,
according to the word of Jehovah."
                                        Deuteronomy 34:5
