I Charge the Jury

We frown upon the so-called hypocrites
yet never realize there is not one.
        Every man, even the Nazarene,
carries more than one aspect within himself.
In some there are only two indreams--
        the godly or the satanic--
but in most these are so multiplied
that only God or Satan can unravel
the riddle and rend it into its separate parts.

Therefore, I charge you to forget hypocrisy,
for it is not on trial, but all of you.
Strike the word from the jury's mind
and even from the planet's languages,
for we all bear bags of masks upon our backs
to be placed upon our random faces
        as the desperate need arises
to fool ourselves and our fellows too.
